Chapter Eleven

Luke sat at his desk in the office at the airport. He’d managed to take a couple of flights during the week. Pete and his wife Holly had needed to go to LA for a couple of days. He smiled as he remembered the sight of the two of them in the cabin. They were both besotted with their baby boy, Noah. They were taking him to the city to spend some time with her family. Pete’s parents lived here at the lake, and from what Pete said, they doted on the kid and Holly didn’t want her family to miss out.

He stared out the window. He wanted to have kids someday. And he’d love for his parents to be around to be part of their life. He wasn’t getting any younger. If he wanted that to happen, he’d need to do something about it. Was he ready to? He nodded to himself; he was. He kept catching himself daydreaming about Angel and the life they could build together. He kept stopping himself, too. How could they build a life together if he wasn’t going to be here? And would she even want to? He dragged his mind away from those questions. They were questions he couldn’t answer, and those were his least favorite kind.

He reached for his phone when it started to ring. It was Austin. He was the realtor who’d helped him find his apartment when he’d arrived at the lake. He’d become a friend, too. When Luke first arrived, he’d thought Austin would be another of the guys he wouldn’t get to know too well since he was coupled up like so many of the others. Unlike the others, though, Luke had taken an instant dislike to Austin’s girlfriend. She’d been one of those high-maintenance chicks with a whiny voice that drove him nuts. He’d been relieved when Austin had broken up with her.

“Hey, Austin,” he answered. “How’s it going?”

“Not as well as it is for you, by the sounds of it.”

Luke smiled.

“You and Angel finally got it together?”

“Yeah.”

“Congrats, man. I’m happy for you. But, listen. That’s not what I’m calling about. You know I keep an eye out for you on anything that might be coming on the market that might be a fit for your folks?”

“Yeah?” Luke sat up straight.

“Well. I just found out that there’s one on Maple. A two bed, two bath on a corner lot. It’s going to be a short-sale, which can be a pain in the ass, but it’d be worth it if you can get it. Do you want to go see it? I’ll email you the details now.”

“Sure. Send them over. When can we go?”

“It’s more a question of when can you go. Tell me a time, and I’ll call them and ask if we can go view it.”

“Okay, how about this afternoon. Say, two-thirty?”

“Sure. It works for me. I’ll give them a call and see if we can get in. I’ll call you back when I know.
